Residents of three local government council areas of Adamawa State have been cut off from telecommunications services.

The disconnection which affected communities in the three council areas of Ganye, Jada and Toungo, had forced many residents to travel as far as Mayo-Belwa and Yola the state capital for telephony service.

The problem, according to one of the residents, Hamidu Lawal, who came to Yola from Jada for telephone service, has lingered for about a week.

He said the situation was caused by the theft of two telecommunication masts belonging to Globacom by some youths in Kojoli, Jada local government council areas of the state.

He said the youths had accused Globacom of defaulting in the payment of its ground rents where it erected one of its masts and a sub-station in Kojoli and Balauru respectively.

One of the youths who spoke to Northern City News on condition of anonymity, stated that the youths in the area, allegedly acted on the orders of the District Head of Kojoli, Alhaji Kabiru Hayatu.

He said the district head had ordered them to seal up the two stations housing the telecommunication infrastructure in his domain due to the running battle he was having with the telecommunications giant.

He said, “Ever since the establishment of the repeater stations in Balauru running up to 10 years now, no single kobo has ever been paid by the telecommunications giant. Meanwhile, it has also defaulted in payment for the infrastructure erected at Kojoli, getting to over one year now.”

Efforts to reach the District Head of Kojoli were unsuccessful, but an official working with Yola Globacom, who said he was not authorised to speak on the issue confirmed the development.

He said the telecommunications giant will be seeking legal redress in the law courts to claim damages because one of the sealed substations serves as a backbone for the other telecommunications service providers in the area.
